Most small business owners are busy running their business and don’t have time to become experts in search engine positioning and online marketing. (That’s why Customer Lobby exists!) This post is a follow-up to our post from September 9 where I explain the basics of SEO. Here, I explain five basic ways to optimize your website so that it ranks higher in Google search.
- Page Titles: The page title is the description of the website page that appears in the browser tab. Though some browsers vary, in Chrome and Firefox you can expect this to be the case. When you hover over the tab, you can see the full page title. The first few words that appear in the page title are critical to optimization as they are the first thing that a search engine will pick up. Three tips for writing good page titles: 1) use your targeted keywords, 2) put the keyword at the beginning, and 3) make sure that the page title accurately reflects the content on that page.
- Page Headings: Page headings tell your website visitors what is important on the page. Typically, page headings are consistent with navigation and can be the same as the page title. Similar to the page title, the page headings should accurately reflect the content that the visitor can expect to find on that page.
- Customer Reviews: Beyond helping to convert prospects into customers, reviews on third-party sites actually improve your website ranking. Ultimately, Google endeavors to give searchers the most relevant and popular results.
- Blog: A blog allows you an easy way to add fresh, original and keyword rich content to your website. Be sure to link the blog to your website to see the results rather than split traffic. In addition to SEO benefit, a blog will give you another way to communicate with prospects and clients and can be used to help position your company as an expert in your industry.
- Social Media: It is becoming imperative that businesses maintain social media profiles in order to be considered valid. Business whose websites are backed up with social media content rank higher. My recommendation is to start with Facebook and Twitter profiles. Set up your account so that content posted to Facebook is automatically pushed to your Twitter profile. Post content a few times per week and even though it is for your business, be sure that your content has a personal tone. Remember, social media is meant to be social.
